“I remember you said to me
That no amount of poetry
Would mend this broken heart
But you can put the Hoover round
If you want to make a start”

It is interesting.. :-)

I think it is an accurate reflection. it shows that sometimes in life the practicalities have to come first.

See, for this one it makes a difference who the speaker is. If it’s a man, all Hades breaks loose because he’s basically telling his wife to get to the housework, and it doesn’t really matter how his heart got broken. BUT, if it’s a woman speaking, it’s a “gentle reminder” that housework is really a full time job also, and he should remember that and help out a little bit. (I’m pretty sure, since this is in G&WS, that this is what you were getting at.)
Some say that “sex begins in the kitchen.” If so, you could look at it one of two ways (or both, I suppose). Man helps out with housework IN ORDER TO “get some” later ? OR man helps with housework out of the kindness of his heart, and woman remembers this and “rewards” him afterwards. (But then would either or both of them have selfish motives, lol?)

Too bad you aren’t getting a few more answers to this one, yet. Don’t tell me the G&WS crowd is afraid of poetry ;)

Have a great day!

I read into the line about the Hoover( I knew it was a vacuum, we have Hoovers here.) that you can only clean up the remnants of the broken heart, bag it and throw it away like so much refuse.
A broken heart means shattered dreams, lost hopes and the poem is correct that there is no more sense to keeping the broken pieces than there is to leaving dirt lying around. you make a clean sweep.
Poetry serves to explain hurt, but it doesn’t fix hurt.
C. :) !!
