Running and Health experts will conduct a series of 12 seminars over two days January 25-26 for the 25,000 runners in the 2013 ING Miami Marathon and Half-Marathon and other fitness enthusiasts as part of an attractive schedule at the Nissan Health and Fitness Expo presented by The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
The Expo will serve as a prelude to the January 27 ING Miami Marathon and Half-Marathon and is the premier event for anyone interested in running, walking, health, nutrition, or fitness-related information.
The Expo will house more than 120 booths and interactive areas where the public can obtain the latest in running shoes and apparel and sample products. Packet pick-up for all race participants takes place at the Expo and last year more than 50,000 people took advantage of the two-day event.
The Nissan Innovation for Endurance experience at the Expo will allow consumers to participate in a running challenge, design a Nissan T-shirt, take a fitness test, experience new Nissan vehicles and enter for a chance to win the all-new Nissan Pathfinder.
Nissan Innovation for Endurance features exclusive, daily content on the latest innovations in running, cycling, and fitness from expert bloggers and elite athletes like Shalane Flanagan, Kara Goucher, Ryan Hall and Ryan Lochte. In addition, Runner’s World Chief Running Officer Bart Yasso will make a number of appearances over the weekend as part of the Nissan IFE campaign. Yasso joined Runner’s World in 1987 to develop the groundbreaking Runner’s World Race Sponsorship Program, creating a vehicle for Runner’s World to work with over 7,000 races representing 4 million runners per year. He has been inducted into the Running USA Hall of Champions and has been named one of the 100 Most Influential People in Health and Fitness 2012 by Greatist.
Yasso will sign autographs at the Nissan booth at the Expo on Friday, January 25 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. On Saturday, January 26, Yasso will deliver a presentation on Best Race Day Tips at 12 p.m, followed by another autograph session from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the Nissan booth. Yasso will also serve as Grand Marshall for the Tropical 5K at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Expo hours will be Noon-7 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is Free.

Matt Fitzgerald – PEAR Coach, Author, and Fitness Expert — Matt Fitzgerald is an acclaimed endurance sports writer, coach, and nutrition expert. His many books include Brain Training for Runners and The New Rules of Marathon and Half-Marathon Nutrition. Matt’s writing appears frequently in Competitor, Men’s Journal, and Triathlete, as well as on Active.com. A certified sports nutritionist, he also serves as a Training Intelligence Specialist for PEAR Sports, an audio-based personalized training system for runners and other endurance athletes. Matt has been a competitive runner since age 12 and also dabbles in triathlons.
Tim Katz – Registered Dietitian, Baptist Health South Florida — Tim Katz MS, RD, CSCS, serves as the Wellness Training Coordinator for Baptist Health South Florida’s employee-based wellness program. With Baptist Health South Florida, Tim is responsible for, among other things, the coordination of employee race teams for community running, cycling, walking, and triathlon events, as well as developing/administering training programs for employees who participate in these events. He is a Registered Dietitian who holds a Master of Science in Dietetics and Nutrition from Florida International University in, Miami, Florida and a Bachelor of Science in Health Fitness/Exercise Science from Springfield College in, Springfield, Massachusetts. He is also a National Strength and Conditioning Association, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Tim has more than 10 years of experience in employee wellness and fitness programming. He began his career twenty years ago in corporate wellness where he gained insight and experience in fitness assessments, exercise prescription and programming, and quality customer service. He later worked for a local health maintenance organization where he served as a liaison providing logistical support to several employer based wellness programs. More recently Tim served as a Health Coach, utilizing Motivational Interviewing to provide one on one counseling to help empower employees to make positive behavior/lifestyle changes. Tim brings his professional experience, knowledge and education to the employees of Baptist Health to help them achieve their personal best.
Joe Muldowney – Head Coach of Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams at Penn State University – Schuylkill Campus; Author, Accomplished Runner — Joe Muldowney is the author of the book, “Running Shorts: A Collection of Stories and Advice for Anyone Who Has Ever Laced Up a Pair of Running Shoes.” www.runningshortsbook.com. A veteran runner, the former national-class competitor has run over 600 road races and 52 marathons, with a personal best time of 2:22:54, at the 1983 Boston Marathon. He has competed in 16 Boston Marathons. In 2010, at age 57, he turned in a time of 2:58:26 at the Philadelphia Marathon. His total training mileage since 1976 is enough to have taken him around the world four times. Muldowney is an educator, writer and coach, and motivational speaker. He writes a monthly running column in his local newspaper, The Republican Herald. He serves as head coach of the Men’s and Women’s cross country teams at Penn State University – Schuylkill campus. He has delivered motivational speeches at marathon events around the country, including the 2012 Philadelphia Marathon. Coach Gerard (GP) Pearlberg – USATF Coach, Level 2, Co-Founder RunningBuzz.com, Author – “Run Tall, Run Easy”, aka “Coach GP” — GP hails from England and has been an avid athlete for 41 of his 49 years. An international rugby player for many years, GP took up distance running in April 1990. He ran his first marathon at New York that year after being challenged by his sister Nicole. After that initial 4:41 at New York, GP was determined to find out why the marathon had been such a challenge. From that day forward, he was committed to uncovering the secrets to moving the human body through space with as much efficiency, economy, and speed as possible. Over the next 22 years, GP has completed 26 marathons, including a 2:34:00 in the 1998 Napa Valley Marathon and a 4:21 mile at the Capital Mile in Sacramento at age 35. GP’s professional coaching career was born. He is considered one of the top authorities on running biomechanics, and he is the full-time coach to several world-class runners, including Florida’s two-time Olympic marathoner, Ronnie Holassie. His talk, “Proper Running Biomechanics: How to Get Out of Trouble When Trouble Strikes,” offers race participants concrete advice they can apply to their running the very next day in the race. Dane Rauschenberg – Extreme Runner, Author of See Dane Run, One Man, 52 Weekends, 52 Marathons — Dane is a champion of exploring what is personally possible. During the past five years, Dane has racked up an impressive number of incredible endurance feats including running 52 marathons in 52 consecutive weeks and completing the 202 mile American Odyssey Relay – solo! His goal is to inspire people to give their all, regardless of what their “all” may be. Whether your goal is to improve as an athlete, do better at your job or excel in your personal life as a parent, sibling or friend, Dane will provide the inspiration to take those first steps and take matters into your own hands! Marcela Todd – RRCA Certified Running Coach, Marathoner, Ultramarathoner, Motorola Wellness Program Manager, Friends In Training Program Director / Head Coach — Marcela Todd serves as the Wellness Program Manager at the Motorola, Plantation Wellness Center. With Motorola, Marcela is responsible for the coordination of employee wellness and health education programs, incentive programs as part of employee benefits, and coordination of community events, among other things. A 44 time Marathoner, 75+ Half Marathoner, and an Ultra runner, Marcela is also the Program Director and Head Coach for Friends In Training, one of the largest Marathon and Half Marathon Training Programs in South Florida. She has more than 15 years of experience in employee wellness and fitness programming, and over 12 years of experience in Marathon Running. She is also a part of our Marathon Pace Team http://marathonpacing.com/marcelat.php and has been pacing Marathons and Half Marathons for over 7 years. Her passion has always been helping others to enhance their quality of life by engaging in health, and exercise programming. She loves to coach and see the positive changes on people as they commit to a goal and later achieve it. Marcela has been running the Miami Marathon ever since it started 11 years ago. The ING Miami Marathon is one of her favorite events, and one she always recommends to her members and those athletes she paces at other races due to the high quality and magnificence of this event. Marcela holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, is a RRCA Certified Running Coach, and holds several Fitness Group Exercise Instructor Certifications such as Indoor Cycling, Zumba, and KickBoxing among others. She is from Bogota, Colombia, South America.
Dr. Gautam Yagnik – Orthopedic Surgeon, Doctors Hospital Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Baptist Health South Florida — Gautam Yagnik, M.D., is a Board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, elbow and knee. He is the team physician for the Florida Panthers and medical director for the Escape to Miami Triathlon, Allstate Life Insurance(SM) Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale 13.1 Marathon. He has served as assistant team physician for the University of Miami and Florida International University football teams, and has provided orthopedic coverage for the BCS National Championship Game, FedEx Orange Bowl, Sony Open and NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Dr. Yagnik earned his undergraduate degree at Duke University, graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He attended medical school at the University of Pittsburgh, where he graduated at the top of his class and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. During medical school he performed surgical research that yielded two prestigious grants from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Yagnik completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. There he was elected administrative chief resident and was given the Willard Award for the most outstanding resident. He completed his sports medicine fellowship at UHZ Sports Medicine Institute.
Bart Yasso – Runner’s World Chief Running Officer — Bart Yasso joined Runner’s World in 1987 to develop the groundbreaking Runner’s World Race Sponsorship Program, creating a vehicle for Runner’s World to work with over 7,000 races representing 4 million runners per year. He has been inducted into the Running USA Hall of Champions. Yasso also invented the Yasso 800s, a marathon-training schedule used by thousands around the world. He is one of the few people to have completed races on all seven continents from the Antarctica marathon to the Mt. Kilimanjaro marathon. In 1987, Yasso won the US National Biathlon Long Course Championship and won the Smoky Mountain Marathon in 1998. He has also completed the Ironman five times and the Badwater Ultramarathon through Death Valley. Bart has also cycled, unsupported and by himself, across the country twice.
Lee Zohlman – Elite Endurance Sports Coach, Sports Marketing Specialist, Television Commentator — A competitive swimmer since the age of six, Lee Zohlman quickly learned the value of hard work and that all the little things add up. At the age of 24, Lee immersed himself into the endurance sports world and quickly found success. Whether rock climbing, mountaineering or completing an Ironman triathlon he has always known that with a solid plan and attention to detail there will be success. Lee has taken these core principles and used them to build two successful sports businesses. As founder and Lead Coach of BodyZen, Lee has elevated himself to the top of the triathlon coaching profession by being one of the very few Elite Level Three certified coaches in the world. Lee has coached and advised some of the world’s top Olympians and Ironman champions as well as thousands of amateur athletes. Lee is also Founder and Lead Strategist for Universal Multisport and has represented many well known events, Ironman champions and Olympians while successfully negotiating corporate contracts, developing media training for the athletes and lending an ear in the rough patches that every athlete goes through. He has negotiated sponsor contracts with some of the biggest brands in the world including Pepsi, Gatorade, Samsung and many more. Lee has been a member of the broadcast team of the ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon and is noted for his knowledge of the South Florida endurance running community. He still competes in triathlons, rock climbs, ice climbs, swims and spends as much time as he can with his daughter Kaia Blu teaching her that the little things do always add up.
