WASHINGTON (AP) ? Internal emails among U.S. military officers indicate that no sailors watched Osama bin Laden‘s burial at sea from the USS Carl Vinson and traditional Islamic procedures were followed during the ceremony.
The emails, obtained by The Associated Press through the Freedom of Information Act, are heavily blacked out, but are the first public disclosure of government information about the al-Qaida leader’s death. The emails were released Wednesday by the Defense Department.
Bin Laden was killed on May 1, 2011, by a Navy SEAL team that assaulted his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
One email stamped secret and sent on May 2 by a senior Navy officer briefly describes how bin Laden’s body was washed, wrapped in a white sheet, and then placed in a weighted bag.
According to another message from the Vinson’s public affairs officer, only a small group of the ship’s leadership was informed of the burial.
“Traditional procedures for Islamic burial was followed,” the May 2 email from Rear Adm. Charles Gaouette reads. “The deceased’s body was washed (ablution) then placed in a white sheet. The body was placed in a weighted bag. A military officer read prepared religious remarks, which were translated into Arabic by a native speaker. After the words were complete, the body was placed on a prepared flat board, tipped up, whereupon the deceased’s body slid into the sea.”
The email also included a cryptic reference to the intense secrecy surrounding the mission. “The paucity of documentary evidence in our possession is a reflection of the emphasis placed on operational security during the execution of this phase of the operation,” Gaouette’s message reads. Recipients of the email included Adm. Mike Mullen, then the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. James Mattis, the top officer at U.S. Central Command. Mullen retired from the military in September 2011.
Earlier, Gaouette, then the deputy commander of the Navy’s Fifth Fleet, and another officer used code words to discuss whether the helicopters carrying the SEALs and bin Laden’s body had arrived on the Vinson.
“Any news on the package for us?” he asked Rear Adm. Samuel Perez, commander of the carrier strike group that included the Vinson.
“FEDEX delivered the package,” Perez responded. “Both trucks are safely enroute home base.”
Although the Obama administration has pledged to be the most transparent in American history, it is keeping a tight hold on materials related to the bin Laden raid. In a response to separate requests from the AP for information about the mission, the Defense Department said in March that it could not locate any photographs or video taken during the raid or showing bin Laden’s body. It also said it could not find any images of bin Laden’s body on the Vinson.
The Pentagon also said it could not find any death certificate, autopsy report or results of DNA identification tests for bin Laden, or any pre-raid materials discussing how the government planned to dispose of bin Laden’s body if he were killed.
The Defense Department also refused to confirm or deny the existence of helicopter maintenance logs and reports about the performance of military gear used in the raid. One of the stealth helicopters that carried the SEALs to Abbottabad crashed during the mission and its wreckage was left behind. People who lived near bin Laden’s compound took photos of the disabled chopper.
The AP is appealing the Defense Department’s decision. The CIA, which ran the bin Laden raid and has special legal authority to keep information from ever being made public, has not responded to AP’s request for records about the mission.

Lori Roberts?s father, who used to deliver the mail in Mitchell, S.D., has undergone startling personality changes. ?He used to be very easygoing,? Ms. Roberts said. ?Now he?s gotten kind of physical with my mom and my brother, pushing and shoving.? The other day, when her exhausted mother visited him in the nursing home he had recently entered ? by sad coincidence, it was their 53rd wedding anniversary ? he loudly insisted that she take him to Mexico, immediately.
Paul Smith?s father hallucinates. ?He commonly sees a dog lying by the wall. Or a little girl,? said Mr. Smith, a sales manager in Port Byron, Ill. ?He?ll see half-humans, half-animals. Or little stick men running around on the floor.? With hindsight, Mr. Smith sees how wrong he was, as his father deteriorated, to keep saying,?It can?t possibly get any worse than this.?
Neither Ms. Roberts nor Mr. Smith had heard of Lewy body dementia before their fathers were found to have it, a process that in each case took several years because even many health care professionals remain unfamiliar with the disorder.
Yet, ?this is not an uncommon disease,? said Dr. James Galvin, a neurologist at NYU Langone Medical Center who has published extensively on the subject. He and other researchers helped the Lewy Body Dementia Association extrapolate from epidemiological surveys and come up with an estimate: About 1.3 million people ? considerably more men than women ? have Lewy body dementia, named for the scientist who identified these protein deposits in the brain.
You would never wish an Alzheimer?s diagnosis on anyone ? yet it might be easier on caregivers like Ms. Roberts or Mr. Smith if their fathers had that far more common form of dementia. Everybody?s heard of Alzheimer?s; lots of people know someone who has it. Doctors better understand the symptoms. Family members can more easily find support groups and programs.
When your relative has Lewy body dementia, Mr. Smith said, nobody knows what you?re talking about. (It may help a bit that the Chicago mayor?that Kelsey Grammer plays on ?Boss? has it.)
Frequently misdiagnosed as Alzheimer?s or Parkinson?s disease or a psychiatric disorder ? and its symptoms often overlap with theirs ? Lewy body dementia poses a definite diagnostic challenge. Its victims are losing cognitive ground, but they are less prone to the short-term memory loss associated with Alzheimer?s than to problems with executive function: They struggle to handle complex tasks like grocery shopping. They often develop visuospatial problems and find it hard to navigate or perceive distances, so that they lose their way in familiar settings or misjudge distances and fall.
In addition, someone with a diagnosis of Lewy body dementia will have two of three other symptoms: Parkinson?s-like physical impairment (slowness, abnormal gait, rigidity) or hallucinations or the changes in attention and awareness known as ?fluctuations.?
?People can appear drowsy or sleeping, have staring spells, think illogically and incoherently ? and these episodes wax and wane, lasting seconds or minutes or hours. And they?re unpredictable,? Dr. Galvin said.
Lewy body dementia can also cause sleep disturbances in which people act out their unpleasant dreams. Or patients may have mixed symptoms. ?I don?t fault physicians for misdiagnosing it,? Dr. Galvin added. ?It?s not that easy.?
At a minimum, cognitive decline that doesn?t take the classic form of memory loss is a cue, he said, that you may not be dealing with Alzheimer?s.
Why does that matter, given that neither form of dementia is curable and that treatments may bring only modest improvements?
?There?s no way to repair the damage that?s been done? to the brain, Dr. Galvin acknowledged. ?All you?re doing is slowing down the symptoms? progression without changing the underlying disease.? Yet a variety of drugs ? certain antipsychotics and stimulants, and some Parkinson?s and Alzheimer?s medications ? can make life easier for patients and their families, at least for a while.
As important, people with Lewy body dementia can react very badly to certain antipsychotics and to some antinausea treatments.
Moreover, ?if you give someone a wrong diagnosis, the family has no ability to plan,? Dr. Galvin said. Lewy body dementia seems to progress more rapidly than Alzheimer?s; most patients don?t live as long with it.
Less than three years ago, for instance, Mr. Smith moved his father, Jim, now 85, to an apartment near his home. But Jim Smith, deteriorating with horrifying speed, soon needed assisted living, then assisted living with dementia care, then a nursing home and, after some violent outbursts, another nursing home. Now he?s in hospice care.
?He went from being able to live marginally independently to being slumped in a wheelchair, completely lost in a sea of hallucinations and delusions,? Mr. Smith said. Drugs haven?t helped much, except to calm him somewhat.
The sheer onslaught of symptoms, the fast decline, the sleep deprivation are all particularly hard on family caregivers, even after they figure out what?s wrong. ?Physically and emotionally, it starts to beat on you,? Mr. Smith said.
Unable to find a Lewy body support group nearby, he started one this summer.? ?I anticipated it would be difficult to get people to talk, but it hasn?t been,? Mr. Smith said. ?People opened up.?
They wanted information, but they also sought the relief of being with people who understand. ?It?s a very, very lonely existence,? Mr. Smith said.

A British teenager collapsed and was rushed to the hospital this week after eating primarily chicken nuggets for the past 15 years. Stacey Irvine, 17, has reportedly survived on her nugget-heavy diet, occasionally supplemented by a bag of chips or piece of toast, since she was a toddler. Doctors have urgerd her to change her ways, but Irvine’s case got us wondering: what would actually happen if you ate only one type of food for your entire life?
Depends on the poison you pick, but poison it most likely would be. According to Jo Ann Hattner, a nutrition consultant at Stanford University School of Medicine and former national spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, choosing to eat only one fruit, vegetable or grain would lead to organ failure. Consuming only meat would eventually force your body to start munching on?your own muscles. And if you stuck solely to almost any one food (besides fruit), you would develop a serious case of scurvy.
“I wouldn’t recommend this experiment,” said Hattner, who also wrote “Gut Insight” (Hattner Nutrition, 2009), a book about digestive health.
No single vegetable or legume has all nine essential amino acids humans need to build the proteins that make up our muscles, Hattner said. That’s why most human cultures, without knowing anything about food chemistry, have developed diets centered on complementary veggies that, together, provide all nine. At first, without all the right amino acids, your hair starts to lighten in color and your fingernails get soft. Much worse, “your lean body mass suffers. That doesn’t just mean your muscles, but also your heart and your organs.” Eventually, your heart shrinks so much you die; this happens, on occasion, with extreme cases of?anorexia nervosa.
Eating only one type of carbohydrate ? just bread or pasta, for example ? also causes organ failure, due to amino acid deficiency. On top of that, you’d get scurvy, a horrific disease brought on by lack of vitamin C, an essential component of many of the body’s chemical reactions. Thanks to?highly unethical experiments?carried out on prison inmates in Britain and the United States in the 1940s, we know that scurvy hits after one to eight months of vitamin C deprivation (depending on the quantity one’s body has stored to begin with). At first, you feel lethargic and your bones ache. Later, strange spots pop up all over your body and develop into suppurating wounds. You get jaundice, fever, tooth loss and, eventually, you die. Life as a “meat purist” would also be a dead-end.
In addition to lacking vitamin C, most meats contain very few carbs ? the easy-to-access packets of energy your body constantly requires to perform even the smallest tasks. “Without carbohydrates, you’re going to start to break down some of your muscle mass to get the energy,” Hattner said. Again, “muscle” doesn’t just mean your biceps. You’ll be eating your own heart, too.
However, there is one food that has it all: the one that keeps babies alive. “The only food that provides all the nutrients that humans need is human milk,” Hattner said. “Mother’s milk is a complete food. We may add some solid foods to an infant’s diet in the first year of life to provide more iron and other nutrients, but there is a little bit of everything in human milk.”
Technically, adults could survive on?human milk, too, she said; the sticking point would be finding a woman who is willing to provide it (and enough of it). Lacking that option, the second-best choice would be mammalian milk, especially if it is fermented. “Yogurt, which is fermented milk, has a lot of bacteria that is good for the digestive tract,” Hattner said.
These hypothetical scenarios aren’t just whimsical speculation. In many parts of the world, people have no choice but to eat mostly one food: often, rice. Scientists are developing genetically modified rice that contains more vitamins and nutrients, especially vitamin A, in order to fight malnutrition.
Figuring out how to pack everything we need into one food is also useful for space travel, Hattner said. “The impetus of a lot of nutritional science is, ‘How do we feed?people in space?’ Scientists are trying to increase the nutritional concentration of food so you don’t have a lot of bulk.”

No matter your opinion on the legacy of Steve Jobs, we can likely all agree on this: Dude had some unconventional health habits. The new?biography by?Walter Isaacson details some of the weirder ones, from extremely restrictive diets to questionable personal?hygiene. (A personal favorite: One of his go-to stress relievers during Apple’s early days was soaking his bare feet in the company toilets.)
We asked?some nutrition experts to weigh in on some of the stranger, stricter eating habits of the legendary tech tycoon.
Apples-and-carrots only diet
The book details his?occasional tendency to?eat only one or two foods, like carrots or apples, for weeks at a time. Besides developing a sunset-like hue — which those who worked with him are quoted as remembering — there are other health issues that can come from adhering to such a limited diet, says Elisa Zied, registered dietitian and msnbc.com contributor.?
“Although apples and carrots are healthful and provide carbohydrates, they have very little protein — unlike fat and carbohydrates, protein can?t be stored in the body, so it?s important to consume enough protein rich foods each day,” explains Zied, who’s the author of the book, “Nutrition at Your Fingertips.”
Protein provides the body with energy and structural support — it also helps preserve lean muscle tissue that keeps your metabolism raring to go, and it supports muscle function. But if you don’t take in enough protein, your body will miss out on essential amino acids, Zied says. “These essential amino acids are used to make body proteins … that support growth and maintenance of body tissues.”
Another drawback of a carrots- or apples-only diet: You aren’t getting enough fat.?
“Without enough dietary fat, your body?s fat stores can become depleted,” Zied explains. “Your skin may suffer, you may feel more cold more often, and your organs and body?tissues may be more vulnerable against injury — especially risky for those with chronic illness.”
Flirting with fruitarianism
Jobs also spent some time as a fruitarian, a subset of veganism that?means eating only fruits, nuts, seeds, vegetables and grains — absolutely no animal products. This kind of diet does contain some very healthy foods, and many vegans manage to keep extremely healthful diets. But Zied cautions that without a careful eating plan, essential nutrients may be missing.?
“This type of diet is extremely restrictive as it eliminates dairy foods … ?and probably doesn?t contain enough dietary fat unless you?re eating lots of nuts and seeds,” she explains. “And because the foods you can eat (or beverages you can drink) are so limited, you only get the nutrients provided in the specific foods.”
Veganism and the tyranny of the daily shower
Jobs also believed that his commitment to vegan diets meant his body was flushed of mucus — and that it meant he was free from body odor, so he?didn’t?need to wear deodorant or shower regularly. Unsurprisingly, the book quotes former coworkers saying that he was very, very wrong.?
Actually, the lack of complete proteins in vegan-style diets might impede the body’s detoxification process, which “could make him smell even more,” says JJ Virgin, nutrition expert and co-star of TLC’s “Freaky Eaters.” As for mucus –?Jobs may have had a point there. Dietary changes can help reduce the goo, especially for those who produce excessive mucus because of illness.
The agony and the ecstasy of fasting
Jobs would sometimes turn to fasting to create feelings of euphoria and ecstasy. What he was most likely experiencing was something called ketosis, which develops after a period of fasting and can lead to mild euphoria. When you’re eating normally, glucose is the body’s primary energy source, Zied explains. But when you’re fasting, your body creates small chemicals called ketones that act as a substitute for glucose, and can be used for energy by most body cells.?
“If your body makes more ketones than it needs to create energy, a dangerous condition called ketosis develops,” Zied says. “This increases the loss of sodium and water from the body and can contribute to nausea, weakness, fatigue.”
